Soledad Container Village
The City of Soledad in California's Monterey County embarked on a mission to rejuvenate its downtown area, focusing on a vacant parcel at the city's core. Collaborating with Crafted Destinations, ELS Architecture and Urban Design, and PGAdesign landscape architects, the goal was to conceptualize a shipping container village with several designs.
The containers were strategically arranged in a linear village organization, activating the site with a mix of food & beverage, entertainment, and retail venues. Crafted Destinations, known for its extensive knowledge of shipping container design for retail food service, played a crucial role in shaping the selected design. This design not only created an inviting destination for local residents but also aimed to attract passersby on nearby Highway 101, becoming a focal point for the community.
The vision involved vertically positioning forty-foot shipping containers on end, forming a distinctive beacon to enhance the site's visibility and serve as a catalyst for the city's identity within a broader placemaking initiative. Bryan Swanson, Soledad's Economic Development Director, emphasized the community's desire for a versatile space catering to families, couples of all ages, and individuals seeking a welcoming environment to gather, relax, and enjoy various amenities.
Ultimately, the design achieved this purpose, poised to breathe new life into the city center and establish itself as a pivotal element in Soledad's civic identity.

Restaurant Trends to Watch
In the post-Covid era, customer expectations include outdoor dining areas, now a crucial aspect of restaurant ambiance. The seamless transition from indoor to outdoor spaces presents a distinct design opportunity. Thoughtful consideration of weather protection and seamless patio integration into the overall operation is essential.
Design spaces that transport customers away from the daily grind. Incorporate lush greenery, serene gardens, and thoughtful lighting. Prioritize layouts that enhance guest conversations, defining a floor plan that invites relaxation and a break from the everyday.
Transparency and authenticity in dining are elevated when guests catch a glimpse of their food preparation. While this has been a standard for chef-owner restaurants, showcasing a portion of the cooking process significantly influences how restaurant design integrates with the overall guest experience.
