Offset Coffee

Ground-floor coffee amenity for The Plaza at Continental Park, a 508,690 SF Class A office campus in El Segundo built as three linked towers around a half-acre open-air courtyard. Working for Continental Development, we designed a 700 SF café for Offset Coffee, a multi-location California roaster, positioned to face the courtyard and read as part of the campus amenity program alongside the fitness center and existing dining.

The project sits at the intersection of two clients' requirements: a landlord's amenity strategy and an established brand's operating standards. Service is predominantly to-go for building tenants, so we planned the space for throughput at the counter, with seating for ten at a communal table and banquette. We laid out the coffee and espresso service to hold a morning rush on a single barista line — order, grind, brew, and pickup sequenced so one person can work the bar without backtracking, with a separate POS and food prep station running alongside. A commercial kitchen supports light preparation of premade items alongside the beverage program.

Restaurant Trends to Watch

In the post-Covid era, customer expectations include outdoor dining areas, now a crucial aspect of restaurant ambiance. The seamless transition from indoor to outdoor spaces presents a distinct design opportunity. Thoughtful consideration of weather protection and seamless patio integration into the overall operation is essential.

Design spaces that transport customers away from the daily grind. Incorporate lush greenery, serene gardens, and thoughtful lighting. Prioritize layouts that enhance guest conversations, defining a floor plan that invites relaxation and a break from the everyday.

Transparency and authenticity in dining are elevated when guests catch a glimpse of their food preparation. While this has been a standard for chef-owner restaurants, showcasing a portion of the cooking process significantly influences how restaurant design integrates with the overall guest experience.
