Hansen Estate Winery

A small winery nestled in the San Francisco East Bay region sought to enhance its offerings with a new tasting room and event space, seamlessly integrated with their existing production building. The objective was to create a visitor-centric facility that not only attracts customers for direct sales but also promotes membership enrollment.

The project included programming and design for a 3,500 sq. ft. wine tasting and event space, complemented by a scenic 2,000 sq. ft. upper patio overlooking the adjacent vineyard. Additionally, a lower ground-level patio was designed adjacent to a reflecting pool. The tasting room's large open space was constructed using heavy timber framing, featuring oversized wooden corner entrances at opposing sides and large vertical windows above.

Clerestory windows envelop the space, allowing natural light to play a pivotal role. An irregularly shaped tasting bar takes center stage, contributing to the unique ambiance. The project also incorporates a 1,500 sq. ft. office space, strategically positioned adjacent and upstairs from the tasting room. The thoughtful design not only caters to the functional needs of the winery but also capitalizes on the picturesque surroundings to create a memorable and inviting experience for visitors.

Restaurant Trends to Watch

In the post-Covid era, customer expectations include outdoor dining areas, now a crucial aspect of restaurant ambiance. The seamless transition from indoor to outdoor spaces presents a distinct design opportunity. Thoughtful consideration of weather protection and seamless patio integration into the overall operation is essential.

Design spaces that transport customers away from the daily grind. Incorporate lush greenery, serene gardens, and thoughtful lighting. Prioritize layouts that enhance guest conversations, defining a floor plan that invites relaxation and a break from the everyday.

Transparency and authenticity in dining are elevated when guests catch a glimpse of their food preparation. While this has been a standard for chef-owner restaurants, showcasing a portion of the cooking process significantly influences how restaurant design integrates with the overall guest experience.
